Adaptive Workstations - Public Libraries

Overview
Adaptive computer workstations are designed to provide New Brunswick public library patrons who have physical, visual and learning disabilities improved access to print or electronic information. Adaptive workstations consist of a combination of computer hardware and software programs running on or alongside a computer system which eliminate or diminish barriers to print or electronic information and maximize print independence for library patrons.
Eligibility
Adaptive workstations are free to use and available to all New Brunswick public library cardholders. Adaptive workstations can be reserved for up to one hour.
Description
Public libraries throughout the province have an adaptive workstation available to transform print or electronic information into an accessible format. The workstations are wheelchair accessible and are loaded with a variety of adaptive software and hardware. The workstations can enlarge standard print and images, convert text to speech, highlight and read aloud electronic text and perform many other functions that help library patrons access information independently.
Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) units are also available in public libraries. These allow patrons to enlarge print or images by placing them on a tray positioned under a camera. The image displays on the attached 19-inch monitor and can be enlarged up to 60 times its original size.
