FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following statement was issued today by Phylomène Zangio, chair of the New Brunswick Human Rights Commission:

On May 15, the commission issued a statement explaining its position on the proposed changes to Policy 713. Since then, other institutions, organizations and individuals have provided their respective views regarding the implications of those changes; and many of these are deeply personal and, to some, contentious.

This conversation around Policy 713 is complex and ongoing. In light of this and its legal mandate, the commission will not comment on developing situations or speculate about matters that have not yet been submitted for its review as part of a formal complaint of discrimination. This aspect of our function may not be understood but is required in order for the commission to remain an impartial guardian of human rights in the province.

The commission assures New Brunswickers that it will continue to remain vigilant and ensure the principles of freedom, equality, and dignity that are the basis of New Brunswick’s society are upheld.
