MONCTON (GNB) – An Economic Opportunities Summit on gender equality at work was held on Monday.

“As your government, we are focused on jobs, education and health care,” said Premier Brian Gallant. “Advancing gender equality helps advance our economy, improves educational opportunities, and strengthens the health of our families and communities.”

Advancing women’s equality is a key part of the New Brunswick Family Plan framework document launched earlier this year. The framework focuses on five areas:

• recruiting more women to fill positions of influence

• enhancing gender equality

• enhancing pay equity

• increasing access to services and support for female victims of intimate partner violence

• removing barriers to access and opportunities

Participants at the summit included representatives from the New Brunswick Women’s Council, Assumption Life, and Ganong Brothers Ltd.

Discussions focused on actions implemented over the past year, including the launch of the Guide to Gender Diversity in Employment in conjunction with the Atlantic Ministers Forum on the Status of Women in February. Participants also discussed opportunities for further collaboration with partners and stakeholders to better promote gender equality in work settings.

The event was a follow-up to a series of Economic Opportunities Summits held throughout the province over the past two years to identify new prospects for job creation and economic growth.
