FREDERICTON (GNB) – Team Canada-New Brunswick ended up with five medals at the 8th Games of La Francophonie, held in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. This result was welcomed by the provincial government.

“I congratulate the athletes, artists and the mission staff responsible for the team,” said Economic Development Minister Francine Landry, who is also the minister responsible for La Francophonie. “Once again, they excelled and gave their best in the sports disciplines and the cultural competitions, while embodying the universal values of the Francophonie. These international events are a tangible representation of the benefits arising from our province’s bilingualism and diversity.”

During the 10 days of sports events, cultural and development activities, the young participants were able to showcase their talents and express their creativity.

The athletes and artists from New Brunswick interacted with members of the other teams from 42 different countries.

“These Games of the La Francophonie were a reflection of contemporary New Brunswick: dynamic, diversified, inclusive, open to the world, and confident in the future,” Landry said. “And it is in this spirit that we intend to get ready to host youth from around the world at the next games, being held here in New Brunswick in 2021.”

As many as 84 delegations from the member governments and states of the International Organization of the La Francophonie will be present at the 9th Games, which will be held in Dieppe and Moncton.
