FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following statement was issued today by the minister responsible for La Francophonie Glen Savoie to mark International Francophonie Week, March 13-21:

This week, francophone and francophiles here in New Brunswick, throughout the rest of Canada and elsewhere around the world will take this opportunity, through virtual events, to celebrate the language and culture that unite them.

Since 1977, the provincial government has been a full member of the International Organization of La Francophonie, which together comprises 88 states and governments on five continents.

Our participation in this organization enables our province to showcase its technological, environmental, educational, cultural, sport, and economic potential on the international stage.

This week, I invite New Brunswickers to take part in virtual celebrations organized by the provincial government and its partners. One of these events, not to be missed, will be the virtual show (website in French only) that will take place at 7 p.m. on March 20, the International Francophonie Day.

Organized by the association of the francophone community of the Greater Saint John region, this event will bring together artists from the community and from elsewhere in the province who will offer a free show.

Together, let us take advantage of this week to show and celebrate our belonging to this great family of 300 million francophones and our attachment to the French language and to New Brunswick’s francophone and Acadian culture.

On behalf of our government, I wish all New Brunswickers a happy International Francophonie Week!
