FREDERICTON (GNB) – Premier Brian Gallant met with several federal cabinet ministers in Ottawa this week to discuss healthy aging, cybersecurity, the Energy East pipeline project and other economic growth opportunities.

“We had some positive discussions about economic growth, job creation and the federal healthy seniors pilot project,” said Gallant. “We strongly believe a healthy seniors pilot project will help New Brunswick overcome economic and fiscal challenges associated with an aging demographic while producing better outcomes for seniors and spurring economic growth.”

Gallant met with Health Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Environment and Climate Change Minister Catherine McKenna, Fisheries, Oceans and Canadian Coast Guard Minister Dominic LeBlanc, Transport Minister Marc Garneau and Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Minister Ralph Goodale.

“Health care and support for our seniors is important for families,” said Gallant. “We are working to find ways to keep New Brunswick seniors active, healthy and in their own homes as long as possible.”

Gallant will remain in Ottawa to attend the first ministers’ meeting with his territorial and provincial counterparts and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trade, relations between Canada and the United States and the economy are expected to be the main topics of discussion. They will also be meeting with the leaders of three national indigenous organizations, the Assembly of First Nations, Métis National Council and the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, to discuss the role of indigenous communities in an economic growth agenda. Following these meetings, Gallant will be meeting with National Defence Minister Harjit Singh Sajjan.
