FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government has launched a review of the licensed practical nurse (LPN) job classification.

The purpose of the review is to determine whether the work of LPNs remains a good fit within the current Patient Services group. There are about 2,000 LPNs employed in the province.

“We recognize that the work of LPNs has evolved significantly over the years,” said Finance and Treasury Board Minister Ernie Steeves. “LPNs play an important role and contribute to our goal of having a dependable health-care system in the province. We want to ensure they are properly classified.”

The Department of Finance and Treasury Board will lead the review. The department has given notice of the review to the two regional health authorities, Medavie Health Services New Brunswick (Extra Mural Program) and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, which represents LPNs.

The review is expected to be completed by the end of September.
