Overview
If you change the oil in your own automotive or recreational vehicles, farm or forestry equipment or other equipment such as snow blowers and lawn mowers, you have the opportunity to return your used oil and glycol (coolant) to facilities throughout New Brunswick.
One litre of used oil could contaminate one million litres of water. By recycling used oil and glycol products, New Brunswickers do their part to help to protect our environment.
Eligibility
If you buy oil and glycol in New Brunswick, a program is in place to encourage the recovery of used oil and glycol, thereby protecting the environment.
The following can be recycled under this program:
Oil Containers of 50 litres or less
Glycol Containers of 50 litres or less
Glycol - Ethylene or propylene glycol used, or intended for use, as a vehicle or commercial engine coolant but does not include the following:
(a) plumbing antifreeze;
(b) windshield washer antifreeze;
(c) lock de-icer and antifreeze; and
(d) gasoline and diesel fuel antifreeze.
Oil - Petroleum or synthetic derived crankcase oil, engine oil and gear oil, and hydraulic fluid, transmission fluid and heat transfer fluid, and fluid used for lubricating in machinery and equipment.
Oil Filter - Any spin-on or element type fluid filter used in hydraulic, transmission or internal combustion engine applications (except gasoline filters) which includes oil filters, a diesel fuel filters, oil storage tank fuel filters and household furnace oil filters.
It is easy to recycle used oil, oil filters, oil containers, glycol and glycol containers in New Brunswick. There are recycling locations across the province (see the UOMA link to find a recycling location).
Description
Put in place in 2014, used oil and glycol (coolant) extended producer responsibility programs are fully operational in New Brunswick. The programs are funded by industry and overseen by Recycle NB. As with other EPR programs, industry is responsible for the costs associated with the collection and proper environmental reuse or disposal of the oil and glycol products that they distribute in the province. Brand owners are required to have a plan approved by Recycle NB in order to sell their products in New Brunswick. The Plan must outline how the waste materials are collected, stored, transported, recycled, reused or otherwise disposed of by industry.
