The Saint John Harbour Bridge Rehabilitation Project will take place from 2021 to 2026. The multi-phase rehabilitation project is broken down into four phases:

Phase 1 – Ongoing

Phase 1 of the rehabilitation began in June 2021 and is ongoing throughout other phases. The anticipated completion date for Phase 1 is August 2023.

Phase 2 – Ongoing

Phase 2 includes replacement of the expansion joints and installation of new waterproofing and asphalt surfacing. Phase 2 work began in May 2022 and will continue until November 2023.

Phase 3 – (2023 to 2024)

Phase 3 includes the replacement of expansion joints and bearings; the removal of existing asphalt and waterproofing; and application of new high-performance waterproofing and new asphalt.

Phase 4 – (2024 to 2026)

Phase 4 includes deck rehabilitation of both ramps located on the east end, replacement of bearings, and pier repairs at numerous locations for the underside of the bridge.

During work in the final phase, the bridge ramps will be closed with driving lanes on the bridge remaining open to four lanes of traffic.

To complete the multiphase work, the bridge will be reduced to two lanes from early April until late November annually during Phases 1 to 3.
