FREDERICTON (GNB) – Sisters in Spirit “Week of Awareness” is being observed in New Brunswick, Oct. 3-8.

The objective is to remember missing and murdered indigenous women and girls across Canada, and to stand alongside their families to offer support.

“Violence against aboriginal women and girls is a significant issue that impacts aboriginal communities and families throughout the province,” said Service New Brunswick Minister Ed Doherty, who is also minister responsible for Aboriginal Affairs. “It is important that people come together this week, and every week, to extend support to families affected by the loss of a loved one to violence.”

This year, all six Maliseet (Wolastoqiyik) communities have united for a week of awareness. Information about the planned events is available online.

First observed in 2005, Sisters in Spirit brings aboriginal communities and other Canadians together to celebrate, honour and support aboriginal women and girls.
