FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following message was released today by Government Services Minister Ed Doherty, who is also minister responsible for Aboriginal Affairs, in recognition of National Aboriginal Day on June 21:

National Aboriginal Day is an opportunity for everyone to recognize and celebrate the significant contributions that First Nations people have made in the development of our province and our country. New Brunswick is home to 15 diverse and unique Mi’kmaq and Wolastokiyik (Maliseet) communities and this day offers a chance to celebrate together and to learn more about each other.

First Nations and the provincial government are vital partners in the process of moving New Brunswick forward. Our government is committed to work collaboratively with the First Nations to achieve greater social, economic and health outcomes within their communities. We will continue to strengthen our relationship with First Nations through collaboration and mutual respect.

I strongly encourage all residents of New Brunswick to participate in the activities planned for this day. As minister responsible for Aboriginal affairs, I wish all First Nations peoples within our province a good National Aboriginal Day.
