FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following message was released today by Premier David Alward, minister responsible for the Aboriginal Affairs Secretariat, in recognition of National Aboriginal Day:
June 21 is National Aboriginal Day across Canada. This day is significant because many generations of First Nations people traditionally celebrate their heritage during the summer solstice, which also occurs on June 21. It is also an opportunity for everyone to recognize and celebrate the significant contributions that First Nations people have made in the development of our province and our country. National Aboriginal Day offers a chance to celebrate together and to learn more about each other.
Various activities planned across the country throughout the day will provide many educational opportunities with the aim of fostering a greater spirit of co-operation and understanding of Aboriginal traditions through education and awareness. Of particular interest this year is an event planned during the noonhour at Officer's Square in Fredericton, meant to celebrate and honour the contributions made by Aboriginal women in the country.
Celebrating the culture, values and customs of our First Nations allows us to build greater understanding and respect.
As premier and minister responsible for Aboriginal affairs, I am proud to say our government will continue to strengthen its relationship with First Nations through collaboration and mutual respect. I strongly encourage all residents of New Brunswick to participate in the activities planned for National Aboriginal Day.
