FREDERICTON (GNB) – Service New Brunswick Minister Sherry Wilson, who is also the minister responsible for women’s equality, is encouraging New Brunswickers to celebrate International Women’s Day today.

Recognized for the first time by the United Nations in 1975, International Women’s Day celebrates women’s achievements and acknowledges the challenges they continue to face in the quest for gender equality.

“Empowering women helps create a better future for us all,” said Wilson. “International Women’s Day provides us with an opportunity to celebrate all women, while also reflecting on how far we have come and how much work there is still to do.”

To mark International Women’s Day, the women’s equality branch hosted an open house in the lobby at Chancery Place in Fredericton. The theme for the morning was Changing Frames. The event featured framed images highlighting the important impact women have made on society throughout history, as well as a photo booth to allow those in attendance to create their own images.

“From images of suffragettes to today’s photo booth, we want to continue to celebrate women by capturing and displaying their achievements and celebrating their successes,” said Wilson.

Canada’s theme for this year is Innovate For Change. It highlights the importance of removing barriers facing women in fields like science, technology, engineering, and math.

“Our government wants to be a strong voice on matters that are important to New Brunswick women,” said Wilson. “This means continuing important work underway to provide support for victims of domestic and intimate partner violence, strengthening women’s health care, and ensuring women working in the home care and daycare sector are able to earn a good living for the important work they do.”

New Brunswickers are invited today to honour the efforts and accomplishments of women and girls in their communities.

“We encourage all New Brunswickers to find a way to celebrate this special day,” said Wilson.
