Overview

The Temporary Absence program allows the temporary release of adult offenders from custody to meet medical, administrative or humanitarian goals.

Eligibility

There are four kinds of temporary absence in the province.

One day: Permits the absence of an offender for less than 24 hours.

Daily: The offender must return to his/her correctional institution each day.

Full: The offender does not have to return to the institution until the completion of the temporary absence or its revocation.

Medical: An offender may be released for an undetermined time for medical reasons.

Description

It is a program that adult offenders can access. It allows the temporary release of offenders from custody to meet medical, administrative or humanitarian goals. This program facilitates the rehabilitation of offenders and their reintegration into the community as law-abiding citizens. Remanded offenders are not eligible for release under this Program. The legal authority to release an offender for a temporary absence is found within the Prisons and Reformatories Act.
