Why do I need a civic address?

Your civic number is the main physical feature used by emergency responders when locating the source of a 9-1-1 call.

Every owner of a residence or business must display the civic address number so it is clearly visible from the main roadway. This allows emergency responders to find the address quickly in an emergency.

Your civic address is used by many different service agencies (i.e. banks, insurance companies, etc). These agencies may require your valid civic address before offering or delivering services to you.

Your civic address is the physical address of your home or business. This is the address used by 9-1- 1 operators and emergency service providers.

In New Brunswick, Canada Post has adopted civic addresses as mailing addresses. In most cases, your mailing address will be your civic address combined with your postal code.

For example:

Civic address:  65 Brunswick Street Fredericton, NB

Mailing address:  65 Brunswick Street Fredericton, NB E3B 1G5

Your postal code will be assigned by Canada Post.

The NB 911 Bureau maintains the New Brunswick Road Network and other important data to support emergency services. The bureau provides data to Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) and emergency service providers, to help ensure that partners have access to up-to-date geographic information.
