Overview
The Department provides assistance to interested communities (municipalities, rural communities and LSDs) with considering restructuring and becoming a new or larger municipality or RC to better meet their common needs.
Eligibility
The opportunity for community restructuring is available to all municipalities, rural communities and Local Service Districts.
Description
Communities interested in exploring the opportunity of restructuring must send a letter of interest to the Minister. An initial assessment is done by the department in consultation with local stakeholders to determine if there would be sufficient capacity and interest in the communities involved. If the results are favorable, the communities interested then request, by form of a petition, that the Minister conduct a feasibility study. Before the Minister makes any recommendation to Government for a decision there is a measurement of local support in all or affected portions of the communities involved.
