Early Grades Literacy Assessment for English Prime and French Immersion
A new formative assessment tool is being piloted in New Brunswick K-2 classrooms during the 2022-23 school year. The Early Grades Literacy Assessment (EGLA) supports teachers in evaluating and tracking the acquisition of the five foundational skills of reading: phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The structure and content of EGLA has been aligned with the province’s new K-2 ELA Holistic Curriculum Framework and the current L’art du langage en immersion précoce 1e et 2e année. While it has been designed to serve as an everyday assessment tool for K-2 literacy teachers, EGLA’s standardization will allow for the aggregation of student results to satisfy provincial reporting requirements for both English and French reading. During the pilot year, user feedback will contribute to the development of EGLA as a tool suitable for province-wide release in 2023-24.
