Overview

Any person who intends to use a portion of the highway right-of-way must obtain a Highway Usage Permit before such use begins. Applications for permits are reviewed internally and with impacted stake holders. The Corridor Management Section of the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure makes the final recommendation to the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure as to if any application should be denied or allowed.

Eligibility

A person shall obtain, before applying for a Highway Usage Permit, all permits, licences and other federal or provincial authorizations required for their proposed highway use.

Description

Any person who intends to erect, place, construct, develop, repair, maintain or operation a work within the limits of a highway or who intends to excavate, mine or quarry under, across, through or along a highway shall be required to hold a Highway Usage Permit. Applications for Highway Usage Permits are reviewed by the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure and, where appropriate and in accordance with legislation, permits may be issued upon receipt of the required fee. Highway Usage Permit fees vary in accordance with the proposed highway usage.
