Built in 1961, the current Salmon River Bridge is located on Route 10 in Chipman.

The transportation link serves as a strategic corridor for residents and visitors to the Chipman area as well as industry. In 2019, the department recommended replacement of the bridge within 5 years.

The new Salmon River Bridge will offer many benefits such as:

  • Improved safety for motorists
  • Better lighting on the bridge
  • Prevention of flood damage to the bridge
  • Improved ability to meet industry load requirements
  • A more resilient bridge with a 75-year lifespan

The contract for the new Salmon River Bridge was awarded in September 2022.

A temporary construction trestle has been installed and contract work is ongoing to prepare for the installation of the temporary detour bridge.

The plan is for the existing bridge to remain open until the installation of the detour bridge has been completed and open to traffic. The department is working closely with the contractor on this transition and the community will be consulted should anything change with this plan.

The temporary detour bridge is anticipated to be open in October 2023, with the anticipated opening of the new bridge expected in August of 2026.
