The daily closure of the International Bridge between Edmundston and Madawaska has been extended until the evening of Thursday, September 28th.

The bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic between the hours of 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. ADT, (7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. EDT).

The bridge will remain fully open Saturday, September 23 and Sunday, September 24.

Please note, the bridge will remain open to pedestrian traffic during daytime closures. Motorists should seek an alternate route during the daytime closure periods.
Please be advised there will be lane restrictions at the Edmundston international border crossing beginning Wednesday, August 16 to accommodate road construction related to the Edmundston Madawaska International Bridge Replacement Project.

Motorists may experience traffic delays at both ends of the bridge at various times during construction. Traffic to and from Canada may be delayed or rerouted as needed.

This work will take place from mid-August to December 2023. Please continue to check @brunswick511 for updates and impacts to the Edmundston border crossing. You can also visit the Canada Border Services Agency border wait times website.

The Madawaska-Edmundston International Bridge is now over 100-years old and fast approaching the end of its service life with the bridge deck and superstructure showing signs of advanced deterioration.

With the cooperation of Maine Department of Transportation, (MaineDOT) and the US General Services Administration, the 2018 Madawaska-Edmundston International Bridge and Border Crossing Feasibility Study determined that building a new bridge would be more cost effective than the substantial rehabilitation work required to maintain the existing structure.

The project was tendered in late 2020 and awarded in early 2021 for a new bridge to be built upstream from the existing crossing, and the bridge orientation changed to support the construction of a new U.S. land port of entry.

MaineDOT is managing the project with the support of the New Brunswick Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DTI), in coordination with federal agencies in both the United States and Canada.

In addition, DTI will be supporting upgrades to the Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) facilities in parallel with the new bridge project.

The majority of the work on the Canada side of the new bridge is projected to be complete in late Fall 2023 when the new bridge is expected to be opened.

The entire project is estimated to be complete in 2025, which includes the removal of the old bridge.
