ALMA (GNB) – The official opening has been held for a connector road that will make exploring the Fundy coastal region easier during the summer tourism season.
Construction of the Fundy Connector began in 2018, with both the provincial and federal governments contributing to the estimated $45 million cost.
It opened to vehicle traffic last September, however this will be the first full summer that visitors can travel the route connecting the eastern end of the Fundy Trail Parkway with Route 114 and the northern edge of Fundy National Park. The road links well-known attractions and expands tourism opportunities in the region.
“The Fundy Connector has been an important capital infrastructure project for many years,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Jill Green. “Officially opening the final section, which has been decades in the making, will provide a critical link within the Fundy coastal region.”
The provincial government has invested $83.8 million in the Fundy Trail Parkway project since it began in 1995. Almost 70,000 people visited the destination in 2021. The project also establishes a scenic link across the southern part of the province, from St. Stephen in the west to Sackville in the east.
“The Fundy Trail Parkway is a world-class destination right in our own backyard,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Tammy Scott-Wallace. “Thousands of tourists visit the parkway each year to enjoy its breathtaking beauty. Opening the Fundy Connector is an important step in our plan to attract even more visitors to this beautiful part of New Brunswick. We have long awaited this day, and it marks a milestone that bridges a gap on a key tourism piece.”
